SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT INVEST MORE IN RAILWAYS OR ROADS?

A fast and safe transportation system is one of the most important aspects of the development of a country. It is the duty of the government to take decisions that ensure citizens fast and safe transportation. When the question arises whether a government should focus on improving railways or roads, people seem to have divided opinions. Some people think that more money should be spent on roads, as roads can be built in places where trains cannot run. However, at the same time, other people think that money should be spent on railways as they can travel longer distances in shorter times.

First of all, railways offer safe transportation, as accidents in the railway system are far less common than road accidents. Second, rail can carry hundreds of thousands of people and tons of goods at a time, which is not possible with road transport. Moreover, railways can be used to travel longer distances safely at a cheaper fare. People usually tend to rely on trains to travel long distances in a short time.

Spending on roadways, on the other hand, has several advantages, as they can be built in areas where railways cannot be built. The majority of people use road transport to reach their destinations and workplaces. If there are no roads or they are in bad condition, then it would be very difficult to reach there. Therefore, in order to avoid accidents, roads are to be built.

However, the truth has it that it is not up to the government to decide whether they want to develop railroads or roadways. This will be decided by the geography of the country. If the country has more hills and mountains, then no railways can be possible, and similarly, railways will be the best option on flat land.

Thus, all governments develop railroads and roadways according to the geography of their countries.
