THE ROLE OF EDUCATION CONSULTANCY
By Kiran Subedi

Students often find themselves confused about choosing the right colleges and universities for higher education. Moreover, they are also uncertain about the overall expenditures, accommodation, visa procedures, and documentation. The visa application process can be lengthy due to the different requirements set by the host colleges and universities. Sometimes the entire process can take as long as a year. Education consultancies play a crucial role in assisting students in finding the right colleges, universities, and scholarships for further education. These education consultancies offer a wealth of resources, including expertise, information, and technical support, to students.

These consultancies provide comprehensive information about universities, colleges, and academic programs. They also provide detailed entry requirements, course offerings, and program structures. Leveraging this wealth of knowledge, they offer tailored recommendations based on students’ preferences, requirements, and academic strengths. Ultimately, this information helps students get proper information about the option of higher education abroad.

Among other services, education consultancies help students prepare for various standardized tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT, ACT, etc. These tests are essential for students who plan to study abroad. The education consultancies also provide resources and practice materials to aid students in their test preparation. These materials are developed to help students become familiar with the test format so that they can get better results in the exam. Moreover, education consultancies help students improve their ability to read, write, listen, and speak better English.

Educational counselors offer comprehensive support throughout the application process, beginning with advice on timelines and deadlines to ensure timely submissions. They assist students in preparing all necessary documents, including resumes, essays, and recommendation letters, ensuring each document effectively highlights the student's strengths. Moreover, consultancies meticulously review submissions that should meet the requirements of the desired institutions. Acting as intermediaries, they facilitate smooth communication between students and educational institutions, streamlining information exchange and feedback loops.

Nowadays, many education consultancies have started providing visa interview preparation classes. Furthermore, consultancies address queries and concerns regarding immigration regulations, offering expert advice to navigate legal requirements during the process.

The problem begins when some education consultancies misguide students and parents. According to a piece of news published in The Express Tribune and My Republica, many consultancies are run by unqualified people, and therefore they give misleading and sometimes wrong information to students and parents. Some education consultancies are even involved in human trafficking and money laundering activities. These sources collectively shed light on the darker side and unethical practices performed by some educational consultancies. However, despite these criticisms, about 70% of students and their parents heavily rely on these consultancies for study abroad.

In conclusion, ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability must be paramount for education consultancies. In the meantime, in order to monitor education consultancies, the concerned authority of the country must bring all education consultancies under observation. Such actions of the state will establish the rule of fairness, and only competent education consultancies will remain in function. The rest of the education consultancies, mostly the sham education consultancies, will disappear from the horizon.
