SHOULD POOR COUNTRIES DEPEND ON RICH COUNTRIES FOR THEIR DEVELOPMENT?
By Sajjan Acharya

Undoubtedly, the health, education, and trade sectors play an indispensable role in developing poor countries.

These sectors play a crucial role in boosting the national economy of a country. Poor health services cause many people to scramble for medical assistance. This will keep them off the job until they are cured. In the meantime, the skilled workforce of the country is capable of changing the face of the country. And education is the only institution that produces skilled manpower for the country.

Not only the education sector but also the trade sector are equally important for the all-round development of the country. Without improving trade, no poor country can think of economic development. Trading is directly proportional to the economy of the nation. It is seen in countries like China and India that, because of their increasing trade with other nations, their economies have shot through the roof. As a matter of fact, India dethroned England and became the 5th largest economy in the world.

Nevertheless, I completely disagree with the notion that poor countries should depend on rich countries for their economic development. Let’s take the example of Nepal. Nepal has been receiving foreign aid since 1951, but its economy is still backward and heavily dependent on India and China. Too much dependency on others can sometimes backfire. Due to political reasons, India imposed a trade embargo on Nepal in 2016. India stopped the supply of many vital things to Nepal. Nepal’s economy, as a result, came to a screeching halt.

In contrast, countries like India, China, Singapore, Thailand, and many others never depended on rich courtiers for their development. Instead, they utilized human resources and natural resources available in the country. In the end, their countries made significant progress.

In conclusion, poor countries should not depend on richer countries. They should utilize the available resources of their own countries for the development of their countries.
