TRANSLATING DREAM INTO REALITY
Shubham Chandra Bhattarai scores 8.0 on the IELTS exam

By LB Thapa

Achieving a band score of 8.0 in the IELTS exam is no easy feat of success. Every IELTS student would be more than happy if he/she scored 8.0 on the IELTS exam. Shubham Chandra Bhattarai’s happiness knew no bounds when an early morning SMS on his mobile freaked him out almost instantly. The message contained his IELTS scores: Listening: 9.0; Reading: 8.0; Writing: 7.0; and Speaking: 7.5.

“It was like a dream come true type of experience for me. I had anticipated a maximum of 7.5. I would be extremely elated only if I had scored 7.5—this was my highest expectation. But when I saw my band score of 8.0, it was simply unbelievable. I felt as if I were over the moon," said Subham with a flicker of a smile.

Shubham has scored 9.0 out of 9.0 in the listening. This is a remarkable feat of success indeed. All students work hard to get a decent score on the IELTS exam. They put their heart and soul together to get an impressive score, but this is not possible without hard work. Well, improving the listening skill to a certain degree is one thing, but to score a full 9.0 out of 9.0 is entirely a different thing.

“I scored 9.0 out of 9.0, and this should not be taken as a fluke at all. Even before the examination, I knew I would score 9.0 out of 9.0. I was fully prepared to obtain this score. I went through many books and conducted several listening tests, and every time I scored 9.0 out of 9.0. Thus, it is my strong conviction that if we go through rigorous practice, there is nothing that we can’t achieve in this life," said Shubham confidently.

When asked how he prepared listening for the exam, he said, “Listen well and get on to the entire situational conversation and try to comprehend the main subject of conversation or the subject of discussion. This will help us to reach the right answers quite comfortably.”

Reading in IELTS is too tough. This subject cannot be taken lightly. It terrifies students. Only the name of the subject is enough to send a shiver down the spine of every IELTS student. Specific data has not been released by the British Council Kathmandu, Nepal, in which subject most students fail the IELTS examination. But we can easily surmise the subject, and it cannot be any other subject than reading, of course.

“Certainly I agree without a doubt that reading is the toughest subject among the four subjects. It is also true that most students fail the reading exam. In brief, reading is a tough nut to crack for IELTS students. However, this was not true in my case. I made reading look easy. First of all, I did not follow the traditional way of finding the answers in the passage. Most teachers and Youtubers suggest that you make keywords and search those keywords in the passage to find relevant information. I don’t say it is the wrong way, but I found other ways to do the same, and that was more effective indeed. I read the intended paragraph and tried to understand a sequence and given pattern. This method helped me a lot in finding most answers in the passages. One more thing I would like to add here is that I always attempted the third passage first rather than the first and second passages.”

Nowadays, it is found that many students feel nervous while attending a speaking test. They want to avoid speaking with a stranger, but it is not possible. One has to attend all four subjects, and a speaking test cannot be avoided at all.

Well, Shubham scored 7.5 on the speaking test, and it is considered a very good score. Let’s know from Shubham how he managed to score 7.5 on the IELTS speaking test.

“Speaking has not been a difficult task for me. I have the confidence to express myself. However, when I attended the mock test, my score was not satisfactory, and I was advised to change my speaking style altogether. But the exam was around the corner, and to bring a change in such a short time was not possible for me. Hence, I decided to go on my way and focused on my fluency, and the rest is before you. I have scored 7.5 on the speaking test.”

Many scholars and writers have said that writing is an art, and they are right. No one should therefore take writing for granted. Writing is a powerful tool. The world has already seen the might of written words. The power of writing is immense. It can give birth to an empire, but at the same time, it can also demolish an empire like a house of cards.

Writing does hold an enormous place in the IELTS exam. Thus, a sound knowledge of the English language is preferred in the IELTS exam. Flawless English writing is the key to success. The examiner will not be satisfied with anything but poor-quality English. They expect quality writing from students. Well, Shubham has scored 7.0 in writing. Scoring 7.0 in writing is also considered a good score.

“I always took my writing with due respect. Honestly speaking, I never took my writing for granted. I was regularly practicing and honing my writing skills. In the end, I was almost certain of scoring 7.5 for my writing. But in the final examination, I got only 7.0. I was responsible for not scoring 7.5 in the writing. Let me confess that I made a blunder. I became over smart as I did my research on the internet and found that operating systems, pie charts, or maybe a table can be asked in the exam, and this way I completely ignored the graph. In a worst-case scenario, the graph was asked in Task 1, and that I had completely ignored. Now, I want my fellow IELTS examinees not to commit the mistake that I had committed.”

Shubham stands with his IELTS teacher.

Shubham wants to study a technical subject but not exactly IT. “Nowadays everyone studies IT, but I don’t want to jump onto the bandwagon. Certainly, my interest is in technical subjects; however, that may not be necessarily IT. Well, my decision is still in the incubation period. I have yet not made it final, but I will make it final soon.”

“In addition, I am grateful to Miracle Institute for providing us with all the facilities. I am also grateful to my IELTS teacher, who worked hard and helped me score a better band score in the examination. I would like to advise all IELTS students to join Miracle Institute to get the special benefit of the Daily Test. The daily test makes Miracle Institute different from the crowd of many other education consultancies in Pokhara.”

When asked Shubham what he would do after completing his higher education abroad, he said that he would like to work there for a couple of years to gain practical knowledge and work experience. Thereafter, he will think about what he should do in the future.

“Well, I am not that serious about my future plan. I believe in doing the right work. If we are involved in good work, then everything good will happen to us. This is what I always think,"  quipped Shubham before wrapping up the interview.
